Easy Watercoloring with Wink of Stella Pens – Video Tutorial

Watercolor rose cards with the Wink of Stella pen, Aqua Painter, Stampin' Up! Ink Refills and the Rose Garden thinlit die NEW in the 2016 Occasions catalog. Cards by Patty Bennett at pattystamps.com

Roses Roses Roses… I love roses.. Roses in my Garden, Roses on cards, Stamps, Rose Patterned paper.. Roses in a Vase.. you name it, I love them, so I am sure you can see why I love this Rose Garden Thinlit die NEW from Stampin' UP! on pg 18 of the 2016 Occasions Catalog!!

Watch the video below in this blog post for all the details, but in a nutshell, I die cut the rose die using Gold Foil Paper and glued it to Watercolor Paper, then used my AquaPainter, Wink of Stella Pens and Stampin' UP! Ink Refills to watercolor in the image!! They dry very sparkly and beautiful!!!

You can "wipe off" the tips of the Wink of Stella pens and keep using them in different colors, or, you can have a couple pens on hand and use one for reds, one for greens, one for purples, one for yellow.  That's what I'm doing.  Then I won't "waste" the product by wiping off to change colors.

Watch the Video Below for all the info!

  1. Hi Patty, I’m like you I love, love, love Roses. Roses up our driveway, around the house, that’s my favorite flower. I watched your video, you always do such a good job explaining everything. I needed some more ideas on how to use the Wink of Stella pens that I previously ordered from you. Your colors are fantastic. GREAT video! Carol

  2. Hi Patty, I LOVE your video. I ordered this set through a party and I can’t wait to get it. It’s my very favorite set in the new catalog. My set should be coming soon. I am definitely going to try this technique. I ordered the clear Wink of Stella brush from your Free Form but not the gold one because I wasn’t sure how I would use it. Thank you, now I know,so the Gold one will be on my next order. Your card is Beautiful. I have a question. If I emboss do I have to be real careful that the colors don’t run over the embossing? I can’t wait to try this. Thank you and have a great day. I also would like more ideas on how to use these brushes.

  3. I love your videos, Patty! I learn something new with each one. You also have a quiet, gentle way about you that makes it relaxing to watch these! Unlike you, I do not have a green thumb, so all the flowers at our home are stamped ones (hmmmm….wonder if I can stamp a flower garden out in my yard? :D).

  4. What a wonderful technique! Now I have to have that bundle. I thought I could wait to see if it makes it into the annual catalog but I HAVE to try this technique! It is so beautiful. You say that you have one Wink of Stella for reds, another one for greens, etc. Do you find that you still have to take off some of the color if you are going from a darker shade to a lighter one? I’d love to see a rose done with Blackberry Bliss and perhaps Perfect Plum.

  6. Very nice. I wonder if they will come out with an Orchid set in the future. I guess though, it’s easier to play with the rose shape for varieties of colors. I love your samples – they really extend your instructional tips and give us more ideas for how to use the technique! Thank you!

I am so impressed with your beautiful roses!! I am usually a gold, orange, yellow, red type of person, but I have to say the rose done in the purplish hues is just so wonderful!! Such beautiful cards, and once again thank you for your videos that you do so well. Your instructions are so precise and clear to follow. Thanks again for all you do for us. I love seeing you every day.

  8. Hi Patty! These are beautiful & I certainly want to try them. I have a question though. After you are finished do you have to “clean” your Wink of Stella pen in any way? Thanks so much!

  11. Wow those cards are beautiful! I’ve tried water color roses before and they seem to look muddy to me when I do them I don’t know what I’m doing wrong but I’m going to try it again and see if I can catch my mistakes. I also wanted to tell you when I use the tombow glue on thin cuts like the rose I put it glue side down on a piece of scrap paper for just a second to get any excess glue off then put it on my project, this way I don’t have glue oozing out on my project. Just a thought, you might want to try it! 😉 Have a great day!

  14. Patty, I love your cards and video. When I was growing up, we had 2 rose bushes with those 2 colors. Maybe they were the same breed, but they were my favorite! I definitely will be making this card. Love it!

I love roses too and my Dad had a rose called Double Delight which has always been my favourite. It not only looked gorgeous but the fragrance was devine! I was curious about your Whisky Mac rose so I googled it and found this link where you can buy it the US and thought you may be interested – https://www.dobbies.com/products/plants/rosa/rosa-whisky-mac/.

  16. Hi Patty, This is a beautiful card and I love the options of colors we have with all the SU! ink refills! I did have a question, did you have a Wink of Stella pen for each of the colors or can it be cleaned to use with multiple colors. Does the color stay on the brush or can it be cleaned off?
    thanks be well – Vanessa
