Add a Border with a Journaling Pen

A handmade greeting card features three orange pumpkins with green leaves, “Many Thanks” written above them, and layered backgrounds of plaid, white embossed leaves, and kraft paper. The card sits on a wood-textured surface. “Patty Bennett pattystamps.com” is printed below. To read more, visit Patty Stamps (pattystamps.com)

Feeling all the Fall vibes… these pumpkin stamps are so pretty from the Stampin’ Up! Beautiful Pumpkins set!! This is a 2 step stamp set, and I actually used it as a 3 step stamp, stamping the final detailed layer twice in 2 different colors to achieve the darker shading.

But today, what I wanted to focus on is something I love to do, adding a border to my cards. I used the Stampin’ Up! Journaling pen and my drafting triangle to do this. I love this look.. it takes me back to decades of drafting in school and in my early career in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s.

A crafting workspace displays two cut-out stamped pumpkins, a ruler, a Stampin’ Up! journaling pen, and a blank white card. Text on the image reads: “Tip: draw a border with the Stampin’ Up! Journaling Pen.” Tools and paper are arranged on a gridded mat. To read more, visit Patty Stamps (pattystamps.com)

To achieve the layered shading, I stamped my Beautiful Pumpkins with Peach Pie first, then Timid Tiger ink, and for the darkest shading I stamped lightly with Pumpkin Pie.

My suggestion: grab the fall colors you have or love and experiment with a whole sheet of stamped pumpkins.. die cut the ones you love for your projects!

A craft table displays colorful paper pumpkins and leaves, metal die-cutting templates, ink pads, and stamps. Orange and blue pumpkins with green leaves are arranged on a gridded mat. Text reads: “Beautiful Pumpkins bundle: #166012” and “Patty Bennett pattystamps.com.”. To read more, visit Patty Stamps (pattystamps.com)

  1. Great tip, Patty! I used to do this but had forgotten about it. It’s easy to do, eliminates the need for another layer of cardstock & has a big impact. Thanks for the reminder!!!
