Pasadena Rose Parade Floats – 2009

Watch for these floats tomorrow morining in the Pasadena Rose Parade!!

I was born and raised in Pasadena and spent many years decorating the Rose Parade floats with our church youth group! What a FUN experience (except for the industrial strength glue that would never come off!) 🙂

While in Pasadena last week we went to one of the pavillions to see the volunteers decorating the floats for tomorrow's parade.. here are a few photos for you … (image how heavenly it was to see all those roses in one place!) 🙂

Watch for this fun skateboarding doggie!

Float 3

For items like the butterfly and flower below, they cover them mostly with seeds and these can be done many days or weeks ahead of time.  All the live flowers go on last..

Float 4

The people in the photo below are cutting the stems off the roses and putting them in the little vials of water before they go onto a float.

This is one of the float designers.. he usually rides a float with one of his gorgeous birds.  I went over to take a photo of the bird, then found out who he was!

Have a wonderful and SAFE New Year's Eve… I'll be here conducting a stamping class! I'll share our project with you tomorrow or the next day!

HAPPY NEW YEAR to all my blogging world friends!  You mean so much to me!

  1. Wow, that is so cool that you helped all those years and can be there to see and smell it today! It’s a big tradition in our house to watch the whole parade and marvel at the floats!
I can’t wait to see the West Covina float in action…I was born there! Mom and Dad lived there for 3 years before moving back home here to the Black Hills.

  5. Patty,
Thanks for sharing those great photos. The float designer picture was fun for me as I am a parrot aficionado. That is a gorgeous Hyacinth macaw.
PS I love your blog – great work!

That´s so funny! My father´s cousin lives in Pasadena, we visited him and his wife in 2007. He told me about the Rose Parade!

  9. Patty, best wishes to you and your family for a prosperous and healthly New Year. I love the photos and it brought back memories. I grew up in Altadena and all through high school I was involved in the building of the floats every year plus sleeping out on Colorado Blvd. the night before to get a great spot to watch.

  11. Oh how neat! I grew up in Orange County and slept on the street (sidewalk!) a time or two on New Years Eve and watched the Rose Parade, I am on the other coast now and every year I watch the parade on TV and remember what fun it was. I had no idea how it looked behind the scenes, this was really cool- thanks for sharing the pictures!

  12. How fun to be that close to where they make the floats for the Rose Parade! My upline grew up close to there, too, and said it was awesome to watch the parade in person. One day I’ll get out there…maybe the next time Ohio State goes to the Rose Bowl! Thanks for sharing your pictures…hope you had a great holiday. I’m really hoping to catch up to you at Leadership this year! Save a swap for me!

  13. Happy New Year Patty!
Gotta echo some of the others. I can remember several nights sleeping on the Blvd and also trimming flowers one year. Thanks for sharing your all “access backstage pass” with us all. Now that I live in Oregon with its snowy winters I love seeing a virtual California winter. Gives one hope that Spring will come again.
If you want a recap of the skateboarding pups check out the MSNBC site. They did an entire piece on their nightly news about the float and the dogs! It’s a howler!
    Hugs and blessings – Jean
